Coca-Cola gives a boost to returnable glass in Austria

Coca-Cola Hellenic Bottling Company (HBC) is increasing its share of returnable products in Austria – and has ordered a new returnable-glass line from Krones for the purpose.

The Coca-Cola licensee has concentrated its filling for the Austrian market at its Edelstal plant in Austria's Burgenland region, on the border with Slovakia. Krones had previously delivered a new returnable-glass line rated at 40,000 bottles per hour to this site, back in 2016. And before that, a Krones bottle washer was in use there. The positive experience with these systems and many years of successful collaboration have led to this subsequent order.

    Project: New 50,000-bph returnable-glass line
    Customer: Coca-Cola HBC Austria GmbH
    Location: Edelstal, Austria
    Commissioning: May 2023
    Scope:

    The turnkey line includes:

    Special features:

The new line replaces an existing filling line and expands the plant's capacity for returnable glass bottles. For filling, Coca-Cola HBC chose the Modulfill HES. This fully automatic probe filler with automated height adjustment and CIP cups does not require vent tubes, which would need to be changed over. The result is short changeover and cleaning times when switching to a different bottle size. Other outstanding features of the filler include low product losses and highly precise filling thanks to two filling speeds, which can be switched without turbulence.

The filler also boasts a cleanroom roof, which ensures a hygienic environment, and a foam cleaning system. Two cappers will be installed – one for crowns and one for aluminum screw caps – thus covering Coca-Cola HBC Austria's entire beverage portfolio. The line is designed to accommodate a variety of bottle sizes, and the order includes SitePilot Line Diagnostics, a system for monitoring, cause identification, and analysis. Moreover, Krones is developing a special Industry-4.0 interface specifically for Coca-Cola for master line control.

"The new returnable-glass line is an important step for us towards establishing a balanced packaging mix within our portfolio. Given our excellent, long-standing relationship with Krones – which includes our experience with the predecessor line in Edelstal – it's only logical that we should rely on Krones' expertise for this strategically important investment," explains Patrick Redl, plant manager for Coca-Cola HBC Austria.
