"The most important factor is knowing what your consumers want."

Interview with Peter Leang, President of Khmer Beverages

Peter Leang, President of Khmer Beverages, is one of six siblings, all of whom are involved in the family business. He learned about brewing from the ground up, attending the VLB (Versuchs- und Lehranstalt für Brauerei) Berlin – a renowned research and training institution – and earning his brewmaster certification there.

Mr. Leang, what do you consider to be the most important benefits of working with Krones?

Partnering with Krones offers three key advantages:

Firstly, Krones is known around the world as a supplier of brewery and beverage solutions to large beer and beverage producers. I firmly believe that my positive experiences with Krones reflect the company's exceptional quality. They offer such well-engineered machines and technologies for beer and beverage production.
Secondly, our products are intended for human consumption and must therefore be produced on machinery that ensures the highest standards of hygiene and quality.
And thirdly, Krones' project management is simply outstanding. They enabled us to get our machines up and running on schedule. Those are the reasons why Krones has been our partner for all these years and will remain so.

How satisfied are you with the systems Krones has installed so far?

Krones has delivered not only the filling solutions but also many other systems for the brewhouse, cold block, utilities, syrup room, and much more, covering all aspects of beer and beverage production. We've been happy with these solutions for several reasons: Their quality is outstanding, and they enable us to produce high-quality drinks under hygienic conditions. They also substantially reduce production losses. In short, Krones machines are highly efficient and meet our expectations.

And what are Khmer Beverages' next goals?

Our aim is to be a leading producer of beer and other beverages, not only in Cambodia but across the region and beyond. The beer market in Cambodia is relatively saturated. However, there are opportunities for growth because Cambodia is an emerging market and one of the fastest-growing economies in Southeast Asia. If we compare Cambodia's progress with our neighbors, like Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia or Singapore, we can see that our country is catching up – and that means additional opportunity on this intensely competitive market.

What investments are planned for the future?

Future investments in expanding our brewery will depend on actual market demand in Cambodia. Khmer Beverages is currently in the fourth phase of expansion and, in it, we're focusing on building out our production of non-alcoholic beverages. Exports have always been one of our strengths, but we're still in the early stages – after all, we've only been in the sector for a little over a decade. The domestic market is our first priority. We're well rooted here. But we'll also look at options for when and where we'd like to export in the future.
