Familiarity and mutual understanding provide a strong basis for collaboration. It’s a synergy that is bearing fruit in a current joint project of Krones and RheinfelsQuellen H. Hövelmann GmbH & Co. KG – and there isn’t even a new filling line involved.

Krones is currently supporting the Duisburg, Germany-based family enterprise on its path to Industry 4.0 – more specifically, restructuring the software landscape in its production operations. Those operations have grown considerably since the company was founded back in 1905. Today, RheinfelsQuellen H. Hövelmann fills more than 210,000 bottles of mineral water and soft drinks per hour. And as the company’s production output has grown, so, too, have its workforce, IT landscape, and sheer volume of operating data.

RheinfelsQuellen has now made it its mission to optimize the digital aspect, preferably with the help of a partner who can draw from a comprehensive range of solutions, a one-stop-shop. Our IT solutions and strong background in the beverage industry put us at the top of their list.

We began by examining the beverage operation’s requirements. Over the course of several months – and numerous workshops, visits to reference sites, and project meetings – we were able to precisely define the specific needs, formulate solutions, and establish ourselves as the right partner for the transformation.

In the months ahead, we will implement several components as part of this IT project:

    • Update of the existing production data acquisition system to the level of SitePilot Line Diagnostics for the filling lines
    • SitePilot Line Management for systems-based machine parameterization and operator guidance
    • Production planning system, including sales forecast, master planning, and detail planning
    • Replacement of the existing process control system with Botec F1 for the syrup system, neutralization/chemical treatment, storage tanks, and well system
    • Interfaces to ERP and warehouse management system
    • Support concept for the solutions listed above

What makes this project unique are, without doubt, the brownfield environment – that is, the digitalization and automation of an existing machinery landscape – and the fact that it was a stand-alone IT project with no new-machinery order attached.
