Schlossbrauerei Maxlrain is investing in its first turnkey filling line – and has chosen Krones to deliver it.
    • Now Schlossbrauerei Maxlrain (Maxlrain castle brewery) is about to get the biggest investment in its history: An entirely new filling line – all of it built and installed by Krones. Image credits:

Krones is extremely pleased to have been awarded the contract to supply a new turnkey filling line to Schlossbrauerei Maxlrain. All the more so because Krones’ own Rosenheim plant stands just a few kilometers from Maxlrain, and many Krones employees are among Maxlrain’s regular customers.

In the Alpine foothills of Upper Bavaria lies Maxlrain Castle, a Renaissance castle framed against the backdrop of Wendelstein mountain. It is home to one of Germany’s most beautiful golf courses stretching over 140 hectares, a venue for large open-air concerts, a vintage car show and medieval tournaments. All that’s missing is a cosy brewery with an authentic beer garden to perfect the picture. But of course Maxlrain Castle, which is owned by Dr. Erich Prinz von Lobkowicz and lies about 60 kilometers south of Munich, has that too.

    Award-winning beers

The traditional local brewery in Upper Bavaria offers a classic assortment of beers ranging from pale lagers, wheat beers, Pilsen and dark lager styles to seasonal specialties and beers with reduced alcohol content as well as non-alcoholic varieties. Maxlrain has been brewing its popular Maxl Helles since long before pale lagers were trendy. And their beers have been perennial award-winners: Schlossbrauerei Maxlrain’s outstanding quality has earned it the German Agricultural Society (DLG) Award – the highest honor that a German company in the food industry can receive for their quality performance – for beer every year for the past 15 years, even taking gold – and, with it, the title of “Germany’s Brewery of the Year” – in 2012 and 2016.

The first official mention of beer being brewed in Maxlrain castle dates back to 1636. The current Art Nouveau-style brewery site was built in 1876. And now Schlossbrauerei Maxlrain (Maxlrain castle brewery) is about to get the biggest investment in its history: An entirely new filling line – all of it built and installed by Krones.

A conscious choice for a turnkey line

With this line, whose rated output is 20,000 bottles per hour, Krones is demonstrating that this global corporation is also a partner for small and mid-sized breweries. “We’re committed to our regional roots,” stresses Stefan Englert, the sales engineer in charge of the Maxlrain account. Maxlrain’s owner Dr. Erich Prinz von Lobkowicz adds, “We never imagined that we could afford a Krones filling line. But by entrusting them with the turnkey project, we’ve saved ourselves a lot of time and headaches picking out individual machines from different manufacturers and trying to connect them all.”

Project: Turnkey filling line rated at 20,000 bottles per hour
Customer: Schlossbrauerei Maxlrain GmbH Co. KG
    Location: Maxlrain, Germany
    Commissioning: Fall 2022
    Scope: The turnkey line includes
    • Pressant Portal lift-off depalletizer for bulk glass
    • Lavatec E2 single-end bottle washer
    • Linatronic empty-bottle inspector
    • VarioFlash B flash pasteurization system
    • Modulfill HRS bottle filler with two cappers (for traditional crowns and ring-pull caps)
    • Ergomatic labeler with three wet-glue labeling stations
    • Checkmat FM-G (fill level) and E (label placement) inspection systems, the latter of which is integrated into the labeller’s touchscreen
    • Robogrip combination palletizer and depalletizer
    • VarioClean CIP system

Krones integrated the decorker, packer, crate washer, pallet wrapper, and cap feed units from third-party manufacturers, whose machines are designed specifically for this output range.

The line is set up to handle three different 0.5-liter and two different 0.33-liter glass bottles. The filled bottles are further packaged in two different 20-pack and two different 24-pack modular crates.

    High standards of quality

Sedimentation and dosing systems are integrated into the Lavatec bottle washer. In addition, the inclusion of separate caustic detection sensors and a pressure-controlled empty pallet inspection unit in the dry end was important to Maxlrainer, so as to ensure that only flawless pallets make their way to customers. That’s because Maxlrain’s commitment to quality doesn’t end with the product itself.

The new line replaces an existing, older line that still uses some machines dating back to the 1970s. While this vintage line is currently housed in a handsome but crowded space with vaulted ceilings, the new line will take up residence in a new hall built specially for it. That will simplify the transition from one line to the other as the old line won’t be stopped until the new Krones line is up and running.
